Former Whoop Exec Launches Alma: AI-Powered App for Nutrition

Generative AI is transforming the app development landscape by offering users services traditionally provided by expensive professionals, such as therapists or executive assistants, at a fraction of the cost. Rami Alhamad, former VP of product at fitness company Whoop, brings this concept to the nutrition space with his new app, Alma.

Launching today in North America, Alma is a sleek iOS app combining a calorie tracker and a nutrition guide powered by AI. Unlike fitness apps like MyFitnessPal, which require users to manually search for dishes and input meal data, Alma simplifies the process. Users can chat or type to Alma’s AI assistant about what they ate, and the app estimates portions and calorie intake. You can also adjust the estimates after they’re provided.

Alternatively, users can upload a photo of their meal, and the app’s AI identifies the dishes. While this feature is available in other apps like Kholsa-backed Healthify and YC-backed SnapCalorie, Alma differentiates itself with its design, variety of input methods, and ease of use.

Beyond calorie tracking, Alma’s AI assistant can suggest meals based on goals like fiber and protein intake. Users can even upload a menu picture and get meal recommendations aligned with their objectives.

The app also provides a daily score based on calories and macros, offering tips for diet improvement. As users interact with the AI assistant, Alma learns their preferences and tailors suggestions, allowing users to view and edit insights in their profiles.
